A fob that stopped working might need a battery, have lost its pairing, or have a fault in the fob or the vehicle: very different bills. Before you buy anything, here is how to tell.
Does the fob need programming, or just a battery?
Start here. A coin cell costs a few dollars, and a surprising share of "dead fob" calls end there.
Remote range fading over weeks points to the fob battery
It used to work from across the parking lot, then the next row, then only a metre away. Gradual decline usually means the battery. A fob that has lost its pairing tends to stop outright.
A fob that quit right after a battery change needs checking first
Most fobs keep their pairing through a battery swap. Check the cell type, which way round it sits and the contacts. If it still does nothing, we test the fob and its pairing before assuming a reprogram.
The car starts normally but the remote buttons do nothing
Useful diagnostic. The immobilizer chip and the remote are separate systems in the same plastic shell. If the car starts, the chip is fine and only the remote side needs attention, which is usually the less expensive half.
A spare fob that has never worked since you bought the car
Very common on privately bought used cars. Often the second fob was never paired to this vehicle, or was paired and later wiped. Before programming it, we check compatibility, the battery and its pairing.

Separate remote fobs on a keyring
A remote that lives alongside a plain metal key. The key starts the car, the fob does the doors. These are the most straightforward to pair and the easiest to find replacements for.
Remote-head keys, where the buttons live on the key
Blade, transponder chip and remote buttons in one unit. Two systems to pair, so slightly more work than a separate remote, and a more expensive part to replace.
Flip keys and switchblade remotes
The blade folds into the body. Mechanically they are a remote-head key; the difference is the hinge, which is also the part that fails. A worn flip hinge can be replaced without touching the electronics or the pairing.
Push-button start smart keys
Proximity fobs that stay in your pocket. Pairing these is a security procedure, so proof of ownership matters more here and some makes require an online authorization code. We also cut any hidden emergency blade to your locks.

Either can work. If you bought a fob online, tell us its part number before the appointment. Many low-cost fobs are the wrong frequency or a clone that will not take a pairing.
A rolling-code remote or a proximity smart key
Rolling-code remotes are routine. Proximity smart keys involve the vehicle's security system and cost more to pair.
Makes that need an online security code to pair a fob
Several manufacturers require a PIN or security code from their database, with proof of ownership, before adding a key. That is a real cost and a real wait, and you hear both when you call.
Programming one fob or the whole set
Pairing several in the same session costs much less per fob than pairing them one at a time, because the vehicle only has to be put into programming mode once.

On most vehicles we program, pairing happens through the diagnostic port under the dash, the same connector a mechanic uses, without cutting or splicing anything.

That matters for warranty peace of mind: properly executed fob programming is a software operation on a port the manufacturer put there for the purpose.

Bring every fob you own to the appointment, including the one that doesn't work.
This is the single most useful thing you can do, and the most commonly skipped.
On many vehicles, programming keys replaces the entire stored list rather than adding to it.
If your working fob is at home in a drawer while we pair a new one, that fob can be wiped. Then you need a second appointment to re-pair a fob that was working fine this morning.
So bring all of them: the one you use, the spare, the one that stopped working, and the mystery one from the glovebox.
It costs nothing to have them present and it is much less expensive than pairing them separately later.

Can you program a used key fob from another car?
Sometimes. A used fob can often be reprogrammed to another car of the same make and system, unless it is permanently locked to its original VIN. Check the part number with us before you buy it.
Why did my second fob stop working after the first was programmed?
Most likely the vehicle wiped its stored list and relearned only the fobs present during programming. If your second fob was not in the car, it was not relearned. Bring every fob to the appointment.
Do you program fobs for cars bought privately with one remote?
Yes. Bring the registration in your name and photo identification, plus the fob you have. A single-key car is one bad afternoon away from an all-keys-lost job, so a spare is worth having.
Does a fob battery swap need reprogramming afterwards?
Usually not. Most fobs hold their pairing. A few lose sync if the cell is out for a long time, which a short resync normally fixes. Change the battery first; it is the least expensive possible outcome.
Can you program a fob if the car has an aftermarket alarm?
Usually, though an aftermarket alarm or remote starter can interfere with the factory system and sometimes has its own separate remotes. Mention it when you book; occasionally the alarm installer is the right person instead.
