Can you rekey the main house and keep a basement suite on a separate key?

Separate locks can often keep separate access, but the existing hardware, shared doors and authorized scope all need to be checked first.

You want a fresh set of keys for the house. You also want the basement suite to keep its own access.

That is an access-planning question before it is a key-cutting question.

Separate locks can often be arranged to maintain separate access, but the existing hardware, shared doors, and authorized scope all need to be checked.

"One key for everything" is convenient only when everything should open for the same person.

Map the doors first

List the entrances and who should use them.

Include the main house, suite entrance, any shared exterior door, and separately secured storage or utility spaces.

Our residential locksmith service can assess the hardware against that plan.

Identify shared access clearly

A common entrance creates a different requirement from two fully separate entrances.

Explain which doors should accept a shared key and which must remain independent. Do not rely on a description such as "the downstairs key." Write down the intended doors.

What can rekeying do?

For compatible, serviceable locks, rekeying changes which key operates the cylinder.

Our residential rekeying service can assess which locks can be retained and how separate key groups could be arranged.

Compatibility still matters

Different locks may use different keyways or systems. Matching some of them may require hardware changes.

The final arrangement should be confirmed after examining the locks, rather than promised from the number of doors alone.

Confirm authorization before changing access

For an occupied rental suite, coordinate with the authorized parties and confirm the applicable tenancy and access requirements before proceeding.

Ownership does not make every proposed access change appropriate. Explain the tenancy situation when arranging the work so the scope can be established.

This article concerns planning the hardware, not deciding anyone's legal access rights.

Does a sticking lock need rekeying?

A key-control issue and a mechanical fault are different problems.

If a door catches, a handle is loose, or a cylinder turns poorly, mention it. Our lock repair service can assess whether repair or replacement is needed alongside any rekey.

A new key will not persuade a misaligned door to behave.

What affects the price?

The number of cylinders, hardware type, key arrangement, and number of copies all matter.

Our house rekey cost guide explains common factors. Request a current quote that clearly states the service call, work, parts, and keys.

Ask for separate key groups to be labelled during handover.

Test the intended access before the visit ends

Confirm that each new key operates the doors it should, and does not operate doors intended to remain separate.

Keep the finished access record private and give copies only to the appropriate people.
