Lost your condo mailbox key in Vancouver? Who to contact first
Start by working out who manages the box. That decides who can authorize a replacement and which service you need.
It is a very small key until you need it.
Then it becomes the only thing standing between you and a replacement bank card, an important letter, or the parcel notice you were waiting for.
If you have lost your condo mailbox key, start by identifying who manages the box. That determines who can authorize a replacement and which service you need.
Is it a building mailbox or a Canada Post community mailbox?
These are different arrangements.
Canada Post says it does not maintain the locks and keys for condo, strata, apartment, or business mailboxes. For a private building mailbox, start with building management or your landlord. For a Canada Post community mailbox, use Canada Post's lost-key process.
A shared mailbox bank inside a lobby is not automatically maintained by Canada Post just because the mail arrives there.
What about a parcel locker?
Tell the person you contact whether the missing key belongs to your regular mailbox or a separate parcel compartment.
Do not arrange changes to shared delivery-access hardware yourself. The right contact can confirm how that particular system is managed.
Ask building management about the process
Before booking a locksmith, ask:
- Who authorizes work on the mailbox?
- Is there a designated service provider?
- Are replacement keys available?
- Does the cylinder need replacement?
- What identification or documentation is required?
If you rent, involve your landlord or property manager as appropriate.
Our mailbox lock service can assess privately managed mailbox work once the authorization and scope are clear.
Can a new key be made, or does the lock need changing?
That depends on the hardware and circumstances.
A replacement key may be an option for some systems. If the missing key could still be used by someone else, changing the lock may be the more appropriate choice.
Small mailbox cylinders also vary in size and operation. "It is a little silver lock" narrows things down rather less than you might hope.
Send useful photos
Photograph the front of your compartment and any visible manufacturer markings. Confirm the compartment number with management.
Do not post key codes, identifying documents, or mailbox details publicly. Share necessary information directly with the authorized service provider.
What if the key is present but will not turn?
Explain that separately.
A damaged key, cylinder problem, or door issue needs a different assessment from a lost key. Our residential lock repair service can help determine the appropriate work.
Avoid forcing the key or prying the compartment door.
What does replacement cost?
The hardware, access, authorization arrangements, and work required affect the quote.
Ask about the mobile service call, parts, labour, and included keys. Our price guide explains how mobile charges are structured.
For other locks affected by the same missing key ring, our residential locksmith service can assess those separately.
